A new type of mode converter for higher order mode dispersion compensation based on the tapered hollow optical fiber

Abstract

A novel compact and robust converter based on the tapered hollow optical fiber (HOF) for higher order mode dispersion compensation was proposed. The proposed mode converter is inherently robust against environmental influences which can be sliced to single mode fibers (SMF) with a low loss. The results showed that the converter based on HOF can convert the HE11 mode of SMF to the HE12 mode in a step index dispersion compensating fiber (DCF) with a coupling efficiency more than 80%.
