Abstract
A slag/metal equilibrium experiment was conducted to derive an equation that correlates the activity coefficient of manganese (Mn) in copper (Cu) to temperature in the process of determining the activity of MnO in slags. The activity of Mn in liquid Cu was measured by equilibrating the Cu with a solid MnO pellet using an Al2O3 crucible in CO-CO2 gas mixture. The activity coefficient of Mn in Cu with respect to liquid Mn was calculated by analyzing Mn in Cu. The metallic Cu separated from a MnO pallet was supplied for the chemical analysis of the Mn by atomic absorption spectroscopy. The linear relationship between the activity and concentration of Mn in Cu was obtained in temperature range from 1623 to 1773K. Experimental investigation showed that the activity coefficient of Mn in Cu and the temperature could be represented by applying the regular solution model to Cu-Mn solution.
