Abstract
Various partial response maximum likelihood (PRML) systems and iterative decoding systems have been proposed for the perpendicular magnetic recording channel. Long PR target such as PR(1,2,3,2,1)ML increases hardware complexity exponentially as density increases. The dual decision feedback equalization (DDFE) detector has a comparable performance to the PR(1,2,3,2,1)ML system with very low complexity at normalized recording density 3 and 4 when a rate 16/17 maximum transition run (3,11) code is used. Furthermore, we propose advanced version of DDFE (ADDFE) that outperforms the PR(1,2,3,2,1)ML system with lower hardware complexity.
