Abstract

Biohydrogen production from industrial wastewater as an energy source has propitious trend due to its waste minimization feature along with the clean energy generation. This chapter deals with the lessons learnt during biohydrogen production with various industrial wastewaters with different compositions that are carbohydrate rich and protein rich along with other biological components. Most of the studies have suggested that carbohydrate content of the wastewater influences the hydrogen production performances. Reactor type also impacts the microbiome stability by means of granulation process, conventional up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket reactors (UASBRs) are feasible and provided better granulation process. Additionally, integrative approaches with electrochemical systems for the valorization of hydrogen fermentation effluent have been highlighted.
