Abstract
This study was conducted to clarify the characteristics of unsteady flow field and flow-induced noise generated by an axial fan in outdoor unit of an air conditioner. In this study, Three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations and the simplified Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings(FW-H) equation were solved to predict the unsteady flow field and the noise, respectively. The noise of an axial cooling fan in an outdoor unit was measured in semi-Anechoic room, and then compared with the result from computational aeroacoustics. The predicted noise obtained from computation agreed qualitatively with one of the experiment. The sound sources were found at the tip and at suction side of each blade. The reason is caused by tip vortex and short distance between fan's blade and strut to fix a motor and fan.
