Abstract

With the development of technology in HVDC, the interest in related power converters is also increasing and, in particular, studies on modular multilevel converter (MMC), which has the advantages of voltage stresses in the switching devices and reducing switching frequency, are actively underway. The submodule capacitor voltage balancing and modulation method for output voltage are the most basic controls in MMC operations. A new nearest level modulation (NLM) method proposed in this paper improves submodule capacitor voltage balancing, total harmonic distortion (THD) and circulating current of hybrid MMC.
