Abstract

The antibacterial effects of silver ion containing film against Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium and Campylobacter jejuni were investigated. Silver nitrate was as used silver source. 0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 mol% concentrations of silver sol were prepared with different amounts of silver nitrate. The silver sol was deposited by spin coating method. The roughness of the film surface was confirmed by atomic force microscopy. Antibacterial experiments demonstrated that silver ion containing film was effective against Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium and Campylobacter jejuni. The morphological changes in the cell wall exposed to silver ion were observed by scanning electron microscope. The transmittance of silver ion containing film on glass substrate decreased as the concentrations of silver ion increased. The mechanical strengths of silver coated glass were slightly enhanced by defect-filling effect of the film. There are lots of bacteria that can cause serious food poisoning in the military equipment and environments. So, the antimicrobial activity of the silver ion containing film showed its potential for use as a coating for medical devices and military equipment.
