Feasibility of time reversal acoustics in diagnostic ultrasound imaging

Abstract

This paper explores some engineering issues associated with the application of time reversal acoustics to diagnostic ultrasound imaging. The discussion is twofold. First, suitability of the existing diagnostic ultrasound transducers as time reversal mirrors is addressed. Second, the reversal of nonlinear process is examined in the context of contrast agent imaging. Time reversal has been suggested as a means to minimize the emergence of tissue harmonic components, leading to improved detection of contrast-agent harmonics. However, simulation indicates otherwise.
