Abstract

Lead barium niobate (Pb1-xBaxNb2O6) crystals have been grown by the vertical Bridgman method, and the formation and thermal fixing of photorefractive gratings in these crystals were investigated. A diffraction efficiency of 8.5% was achieved in a 2.3 mm thick Pb0.5Ba0.5Nb2O6 crystal. As-grown crystals contained a high concentration of protons (H+) essential for the thermal fixing of gratings. In addition, the proton concentration could be increased by heat treatment in a humid atmosphere and decreased in an ambient or oxygen atmosphere. The fixing efficiency increased with increasing proton concentration.
