Guiding atoms along hollow optical fibres: Creating an atom hosepipe

Abstract

Recent advances in atomic and laser physics have seen the emergence of a new area of atom guiding. Atoms are transported along hollow core optical fibres. This article outlines the motivation for this research and the physical ideas used to achieve these atom ‘hosepipes'.
