Identifying the effect of an alternative environment to improve the care of the elderly in Korea

Abstract

The aging population has been rapidly increasing in Korea making people difficult to cope with the change. This study aimed to understand how innovative alternative housing could be adopted by the elderly through empirical survey to residents by providing accurate information about current housing condition and the seriousness brought by the aging society, utilizing visual information. The characteristics of the alternative housing preference according to 4 aging situations were asked. It analyzed the differences in housing preference before and after providing information in each situation. The results are as follows: first, a prevalent existing apartment is not enough to prepare the aging society and an innovatively suggested alternative for the elderly was expected to be a great help to the frail. Second, the preference of the alternative was increased after providing information of the aging society. Third, in the illness situation, a metropolitan city was preferred to the suburbs. Fourth, after providing information, a small sized apartment was more preferred, but the change of preferred housing ownership was not found. Last, there was considerable difference before and after providing information. These results can help us to better understand and cope with the needs of the aging society.
