LP11 Excitation Using Asymmetric Directional Coupler Based on Microstructured Cane

Abstract

In this paper, we propose a novel asymmetric directional coupler based on microstructured air-silica cane for LP11 excitation. The component is composed by two different fibers, a Hollow Optical Fiber (HOF) having an elliptical-ring core and a single mode fiber (SMF), inserted in a microstructured cane on either side of the central hole before the assembly is tapered. Using an optimized geometry of the microstructured cane, the phase matching condition is satisfied and a total power coupling takes place between the two fibers in the waist.At the output of the coupler, 99% of the shared power between the two fibers is transferred from the LP01 of the SMF to the LP11 of the HOF with high modal selectivity (86%) and low insertion losses (0.4 dB).
