Modification of eutectic structure and halo by addition of immiscible element in Fe-based dendrite-reinforced eutectic composites

Abstract

The effect of the addition of La, an immiscible element, on the microstructures and mechanical properties of dendrite-reinforced eutectic composites was studied in the Fe-Nb binary eutectic system. The results revealed the suppression of halo formation in the microstructure and the transition of the eutectic structure. Further, the Fe-11Nb-5La alloy exhibited a large plastic strain (~15%).
