Abstract
Multidose medication management and medication adherence are among the most prevailing challenges in the field of healthcare. Proper management and compliance of medication can provide maximum benefit during the prescribed treatment. Failure to achieve effective management and compliance could lead to an increase in the patient's morbidity and even result in death. Improper medication management and medication nonadherence will also have a massive impact on healthcare costs as they could result in additional hospitalizations and an increased need for medication interventions. Many factors could lead to medication nonadherence or improper management, which include the accidentally missing in the dosage or the wrong dosage to failure in a prescription refill. Monitoring and intervention at the appropriate time could reduce the impact of nonadherence. Various advanced technologies, such as sensor systems, smart wearables, computer vision, and smartphone applications have been utilized to improve the adherence and effective management of multiple doses of medication. This paper reviews recent technologies and methods and compares numerous factors that could impact the solution's effectiveness. It also includes various challenges related to applying technologies such as patient validation and accuracy. These challenges provide opportunities for pharmacies that can help in improving the effectiveness of this technologies.
