Prediction of aeroacoustic noise generated by viscous flow around rectangular cross sections

Abstract

The paper describes the prediction of the airflow induced sound noise around two-element rectangular cross sections in tandem arrangement via CFD based aeroacoustic analysis method. Reynolds number considered in the present study is Re=2×l05 to describe aerodynamic and aeroacoustic characteristics applicable to high speed civil transportation systems. The 2D unsteady viscous flow was calculated using finite element based program in which downstream vortex shedding and turbulence were included. The paper explores noise prediction based on the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings (FW-H) equation wherein three source terms of monopole, dipole and quadrupole are identified. The baseline model is two-element rectangular sections placed parallel to freestream. Rectangular and trapezoidal type sections having different positioning distance between two elements are considered. Parametric study is conducted to examine aerodynamic and aeroacoustic characteristics with respect to configuration of cross sections.
