Abstract

A novel hybrid light guide plate (HLGP) for large area LED display was proposed and investigated the optical characteristics to improve the efficiency and properties by combining both advantages of the direct-type and edge-type backlights. Ray-tracing simulation shows that the illuminance uniformity and color coordinate deviation for the 55-inch HLGP are more than 84% and less than ±0.005, respectively. In addition, it has an advantage of thinner thickness and less number of LEDs compared to those of the commercial direct-type LED backlight.
