Abstract
This paper presents a QoS-providing resource management system for the efficient use of a large-scale VOD server. The server management system is provided with an admission control and a real-time process scheduling mechanism. The process scheduler is based on the concept of periodic nonpreemptive EDF scheduling and runs as an application process on a general-purpose operating system featuring real-time scheduling. The admission controller collects system loads at run-time and uses the information for admission control and process scheduling. By experimenting with the resource management system implemented on a Windows NT platform, the proposed scheduling and admission control mechanisms are validated and their real-time characteristics are analyzed.
