Wide-band slot Antenna on metal bezel for covering 28/39GHz in 5G Communication System

Abstract

This paper proposes wide-band slot antenna that can support both 28GHz and 39GHz for 5G communication system. This antenna is a single slot designed on a conducting plate bent at right angles. This antenna acts like an antenna with two slots because the feeder affects two adjacent sides. This let the bent slot antenna create two resonances, unlike a typical slot antenna designed on flat plate. These two resonances allow for the creation of a wide-band antenna that covers both 28 GHz and 39 GHz. A 4×1 array antenna was designed on the mobile device metal bezel using a bent slot antenna, and the array antenna has maximum gain of 10.9dBi and 12.7dBi, at 28GHz and 39GHz, respectively. In this paper, the characteristics of the antenna are verified through simulation and measurement, and shows that this bent slot antenna is one of optimized solution for mobile applications in the millimeter frequency.
